When single cup brewing systems were first introduced, they were notorious for having really bad favors and a plasticey taste to them. A bit too artificial for most people’s tastes.

Single cup systems have come a long way since then.  Now they aren’t artificially flavored anymore. Most actually have grinds in the pods, allowing you to truely brew yourself a cup at a time.

I’m not going to lie to you and say they all taste good. I have had some really bad single cup coffee before.  Have you?  Let us know which ones you think are very bad tasting.

One drawback to using single cup systems is that you are required to use the beans they sell in the pods. Well, no longer is this necessary.

perfectpodIf you have a type of bean you like, you can always make your own pods. There are several ways to do it. A new invention we found is called the Perfect Pods Maker. It comes with pod sacs and a nifty contraption to press and seal the pods. This one comes with 40 empty bags. It was extremely easy to use and made a pretty good pods by our standards.

Using empty tea bags is another way to make pods at home.  Although we found the tea bags didn’t work as well. The shape and the size of the pores seemed to be the problem.

singlecup1Single cup coffee systems aren’t going to take over the coffee market. I can promise you that! There is always going to be hard core coffee drinkers who prefer freshly ground and freshly brewed coffee. There is however a large enough market for these systems primarily because there will always be coffee drinkers who are in need of convenience. That is where single cup coffee systems have their niche.

Are these systems right for you? Here’s a few points to consider before you buy a single cup coffee system.

- If you don’t drink coffee too often, and simply want a cup here and there, a single cup coffee system would be perfect. No hassle, no clean up.

- Is money an issue? Price per cup is more with a single cup coffee system. It will run you around 50 cents per cup. Brewing coffee in a traditional coffee pot is a lot cheaper.

- Are you a coffee connoisseur? Bare in mind that when you use a single cup coffee system, you are limited to the flavors available to your system. Most vendors are constantly adding more and more different blends, but it may never reach the options you have using coffee beans from the store.

With these points considered, make your purchase an educated one. Happy shopping!
